The Albert W. Thompson Papers contain news clippings, articles, and manuscripts about the early days in the West, specifically, Clayton, Union County, and northeastern New Mexico. Most of the materials were written by Thompson, however, some of the newspaper columns were written by others. Black Jack Ketchem is a prominent subject within the collection. Miscellaneous materials include flyers, correspondence, a map, and notes.

Albert W. Thompson, pioneer Clayton businessman, publisher, civic leader, and historian, was born in Belfast, Maine on May 17, 1864. After living in Colorado he moved to New Mexico. Thompson entered the sheep and real estate businesses in Clayton, N.M. in 1889. Also in 1889, Thompson purchased the Clayton Enterprise, which he operated for two years. In 1905 he relocated to Denver, Colo., but maintained Clayton business interests, and continued to contribute historical columns to local newspapers...
